Smart #5: the SUV that charges in 15 minutes
Fifteen minutes. That is how long it took a Smart #5 to go from 10 to 80% battery at a 400 kW Electra station, stopwatch in hand. Three minutes less than the carmaker promises, and half the time most electric SUVs need. Behind that performance sits an 800 volt architecture that is still rare. But also a trade-off no one should hide from you: energy consumption that pulls no punches. Let's break it down.
What the Smart #5 does better than anyone
15 minutes flat, measured
Smart claims 18 minutes for a 10 to 80% charge. In its Supertest, Automobile Propre did better: 15 minutes at an Electra station fitted with an Alpitronic 400 kW unit. A time that places the SUV just behind the XPeng G6 and level with the Lotus Emeya S, right at the very front of the market.
The most telling detail is not the peak power, but what happens afterwards. At 80% charge, the Smart #5 still delivers 195 kW. Where most vehicles collapse to a few dozen kilowatts, it keeps taking the load. The result: 4 more minutes to reach 90%.
Why 800 volts changes everything
The physics is simple. At equal power, doubling the voltage halves the current flowing through the cables. Fewer amps means less heat, which means the ability to sustain high power for longer without the system protecting itself by throttling the flow.
The Smart #5 makes the most of this architecture with liquid cooling that keeps the battery around 26 °C, its ideal temperature. Preconditioning kicks in automatically when you set a station in the route planner, and can also be triggered manually. That is what makes the difference between the claimed 15 minutes and a sluggish charge.
One nuance measured in the field: at that same 400 kW station, two back to back sessions produced different curves, one peaking at 400 kW, the other capped at 325 kW but held for longer. Almost identical end result, 15 minutes versus 15 minutes and 15 seconds. Peak power matters less than average power.

This table says it all: the car is only as good as the station. A Smart #5 plugged into a 175 kW charger takes 24 minutes, the same as a Renault Mégane. All the 800 volt performance evaporates if the infrastructure cannot keep up. This is the classic trap. Only the Pro+ trim and above benefit from the 800 volt architecture and the 400 kW. The entry level Pro version stays on 400 volts, with a 74.4 kWh net LFP battery and charging capped at 150 kW, around thirty minutes for the same exercise. Its AC charger is also limited to 11 kW, versus 22 kW from the Pro+ up.
The trade-off: a thirsty appetite
The real world figures
It would be dishonest to talk only about charging. The Smart #5 weighs close to 2.4 tonnes, with the unapologetic footprint of an SUV, and its consumption shows it.

The gap between the 540 km WLTP figure and the real 340 km on the motorway is significant, even if it matches the usual order of magnitude we detail in our article on electric car range. The large 94 kWh net battery masks the appetite by offering decent ranges, but it does not cancel it out.
What it costs to run
Automobile Propre's measurements give a running cost of €17.40 per 100 km on the motorway, at a fast public rate of around €0.59/kWh. In mixed use, it drops to €13.50. Charging on AC at 22 kW, mixed use falls to €10.80. And at home, the mixed cost is close to €5 per 100 km.
In other words, the gap between the worst and best scenario is more than three times the price. On a vehicle this thirsty, a subscription is no longer a comfort but an obvious move: our Electra+ lowers the rate by €0.20/kWh, several euros on every charge of a car this size. Size and space
The Smart #5 measures 4,695 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase that frees up generous space in the rear seats. The boot offers 630 litres, expandable to 1,530 litres with the seats folded, plus a 72 litre frunk, reduced to 47 litres on all wheel drive versions.

Power ranges from 340 hp on the Pro to 588 hp on the Brabus, timed at 4.5 s for 0 to 100 km/h in Sport mode. On price, the range started at €46,600 for the Pro and topped out at €61,600 for the Brabus at launch. One important point: built in China, the Smart #5 is not eligible for purchase incentives that require, in some countries, a production origin criterion or a minimum environmental score.
Who is the Smart #5 for?
High mileage drivers, no question
If you string together long trips, the maths clearly works in its favour. Spending 15 minutes at a station instead of 30, twice a week, adds up to more than two hours saved every month. On a family SUV, that is the difference between enduring the breaks and folding them naturally into the journey.
Fleets that optimise time
For a travelling sales rep or a tradesperson, time spent plugged in is time that cannot be billed. The Smart #5 Premium comes out at around €717 per month on a 60 month, 100,000 km contract, for a total cost of ownership under €1,000 a month according to fleet analyses. Against a Mercedes GLB EQ, it holds its own.
Less so for low mileage city drivers
If you charge mainly at home and drive 40 km a day, the fast charging performance will almost never serve you. You would then be paying for technology you will not use, while still living with the consumption. Frequently asked questions about the Smart #5
"Does it really charge in 15 minutes?"
Yes, but on three conditions: a station able to deliver 400 kW, a preconditioned battery, and the Pro+ version or above. On a 175 kW charger, expect closer to 24 minutes. On the entry level Pro version, capped at 150 kW, around thirty minutes.
"Why is 800 volts faster?"
Because at equal power, doubled voltage halves the current in the cables. Fewer amps, less heat, which means the ability to hold high power for longer without the system throttling itself to stay safe.
"Does it use a lot of energy?"
Yes, that is its weak point. The measurements give 21.3 kWh/100 km in mixed use and 27.5 kWh/100 km on the motorway at 130 km/h. That is high for a family SUV, a consequence of its 2.4 tonnes and its size. The large battery makes up for it with around 440 km of real range in mixed use.
"Which version should I choose?"
The Pro+ is the most coherent: it introduces the 800 V architecture, the large battery and the best range in the line-up, at 590 km WLTP. The entry level Pro keeps the 400 V and 150 kW charging, which strips it of the model's main selling point.
"Is it eligible for purchase incentives?"
It depends on the country. Several European markets tie their purchase incentives to a production origin criterion or an environmental score. Built in China, the Smart #5 does not always meet those criteria: check the schemes in force in your country.
"Where can I find 400 kW stations?"
That is the crux of it, and they remain in the minority. Our network delivers up to 400 kW on major routes and in retail areas. Check the available power in the app before setting off: on a less powerful station, the Smart #5 loses its main advantage.
