Price of technical inspection for electric cars: how much does it really cost?
The technical inspection for an electric car costs between €85 and €110 on average in 2025, which is about 8 to 30% more than for a combustion vehicle. This difference is due to additional checks specific to electric systems and high-voltage batteries. Here’s a full breakdown of the rates, specifics, and ways to reduce the bill.
The real prices of technical inspections for electric cars
Average rates in 2025
In France, the technical inspection for an electric car averages €88, compared to €78 for a petrol or diesel vehicle. This €10 increase remains moderate and is justified by additional checks required to ensure the vehicle’s safety.
However, prices vary significantly depending on the center and region: from €85 in the cheapest departments to €150 in urban areas like Paris or Haute-Savoie. Hybrid vehicles fall in between, with an average rate of €87.
Why this price difference?
The higher cost for electric vehicles is not arbitrary. It results from 11 additional checkpoints specific to electric powertrains, which come on top of the 133 standard points. These checks primarily focus on:
The high-voltage battery system and its protective casing,
High-voltage cables and connectors, whose insulation and condition are thoroughly inspected,
The charging plug and cable,
The anti-start system that prevents the vehicle from starting while plugged in,
Ground continuity and grounding straps,
Battery ventilation inlets.
These checks require specialized training for inspectors (electrical certification) and specific equipment, justifying the extra cost. Out of these 11 additional points, 8 can lead to a re-inspection in case of major or critical defects.

Where to pay less? The best deals
Even for electric cars, some departments remain more affordable. Loiret offers the most competitive rates, with an average of €67 for a combustion vehicle, translating to around €85-90 for an electric one. Moselle (€69), Loire (€70), and Ariège (€70) complete the top 5 of the most economical departments.
These rates are explained by lower operating costs (rent, salaries) and greater competition between centers in these rural or peri-urban areas.
Paris, Savoie, Corsica: the trio of record prices
On the opposite end, Haute-Savoie holds the record with an average of €99 for a combustion vehicle, meaning up to €130 for an electric car. Paris (€90), South Corsica (€94), Savoie (€91), and Alpes-Maritimes (€90) are among the most expensive departments.
A Parisian electric car owner can thus pay up to €40 more than a resident of Loiret for the exact same service.
Tips to pay less for your electric car’s technical inspection
The government comparator: your best ally
Since October 2020, the website prix.conso.gouv.fr/controle-technique allows you to compare the rates of the 6,500 approved centers in France for free. This official tool offers several advantages:
Geolocation to find nearby centers,
Filtering by vehicle type (electric, hybrid, combustion),
Transparent display of inspection and re-inspection prices,
Comparison within a 10 to 100 km radius.
By comparing centers in your area, you can easily save €20 to €30 on your technical inspection. This saving can represent several months of subscription to a charging service like Electra’s competitive rates, which offers ultra-fast charging from €0.29/kWh.
Your insurance can save you up to 15%
Many insurance companies have negotiated partnerships with technical inspection networks. For example:
Groupama customers benefit from a 15% discount at Autosur,
GMF offers discounts at Dekra-Norisko,
MACIF provides similar advantages at its partner centers.
These discounts, applicable upon presentation of a valid insurance certificate, can save you €12 to €20 on the inspection of an electric vehicle.
Book at the right time, pay less
Booking online often generates 5 to 10% savings compared to the price displayed at the center. Platforms like Simplauto or CTeasy regularly offer promotions, especially for less busy slots:
Midweek (Tuesday and Wednesday),
Off-peak hours (9-11 AM or 2-4 PM),
Last-minute slots.
To maximize savings on all your car expenses, consider subscription plans for charging. At Electra, the new Electra+ Start at €1.99/month and Electra+ Boost at €9.99/month plans offer preferential rates for fast charging. A significant saving that adds to those made on the technical inspection.
Re-inspection: how to avoid it and save €20 to €40
Gone are the days when re-inspections were free! In 2025, 97% of centers charge between €20 and €40 for this service. For an electric vehicle, the re-inspection can even cost up to €45, depending on the complexity of the points to check. With 20% of vehicles failing the first inspection, avoiding re-inspection is a major financial concern.
For electric vehicles, some points require special attention before the big day:
Charging cable: Check for no cuts or damage.
Charging plug: Ensure it is clean and clean the contacts if necessary.
Battery casing: Check for no damage or corrosion.
Battery vents: Ensure they are not obstructed.
Of course, classic points remain to be checked: lighting, tires (minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm), windshield wipers, and fluid levels. A pre-inspection at a garage, costing between €30 and €50, can be cost-effective for older vehicles.
What really changes for an electric car
No, your battery’s range is not checked
Contrary to popular belief, the technical inspection does not measure the battery’s range or its state of health (SOH - State of Health). These aspects require specific diagnostics, particularly when selling the vehicle.
Emission tests are obviously absent, which partly offsets the extra time needed for electrical checks.
Warning: not all centers can inspect your electric car
Not all centers can inspect electric vehicles. Inspectors must hold a specific electrical certification to safely handle high-voltage systems. This training allows them to identify electrical risks and apply appropriate safety protocols.
When booking, it is therefore essential to specify that it is an electric vehicle to ensure the center has qualified staff and the necessary equipment.
Same rules for electric cars: what the law says
Electric cars follow the same schedule as combustion vehicles:
The first inspection must be carried out within 6 months before the 4th anniversary of the vehicle’s first registration,
Then every 2 years.
In case of sale, an inspection dated less than 6 months is mandatory. Failure to comply with these obligations results in a €135 fine, reduced to €90 or increased to €750 depending on payment deadlines.
The deadline is indicated on the sticker affixed to the windshield and on the registration certificate. In case of a major defect, you have 2 months to carry out repairs and the re-inspection. For a critical defect, the vehicle is immobilized the day after the inspection.
Good news: prices should stabilize
Technical inspection prices have increased by 30% between 2015 and 2025, mainly due to stricter standards (increase from 123 to 133 checkpoints in 2018). For electric vehicles, the trend should be toward stabilization, or even a slight relative decrease compared to combustion vehicles.
Several factors will benefit electric car owners:
More trained and certified inspectors,
Improved and standardized inspection equipment,
The growing electric vehicle fleet creating economies of scale,
Increased competition between centers on this expanding segment.
With the rise of the electric market and the development of the Electra ultra-fast charging station network across France, mastering these practical aspects is essential to fully enjoy electric mobility. Between savings on maintenance, advantageous subscription plans, and tips to reduce the cost of the technical inspection, driving electric is becoming more and more accessible.
