Electric car bonus: 2025 CEE grant amounts and possible changes for 2026

The electric car bonus underwent a significant transformation on July 1, 2025. The government favored a new financing mechanism via energy saving certificates (CEE). This grant, officially called "Boost for electric private vehicles", maintains and even improves the aid amounts available for purchasing a new electric car. Here is our guide on this scheme with amounts, eligibility conditions and prospects for 2026.

The amounts of the new CEE grant in 2025

Base grant according to income

Since last July, the amounts of the CEE grant for purchasing an electric car have been fixed. These amounts depend directly on the household's reference tax income (RFR) per share, calculated on 2023 income for a 2025 purchase, as specified by Service-Public.fr.

For modest households whose RFR per share is less than or equal to €26,200, the grant amount reaches €4,200. This category corresponds to deciles 1 to 8 of the French population. Other households, with an RFR above €26,200 per share (deciles 9 and 10), can claim €3,100 in aid. These amounts represent an increase compared to the former ecological bonus which capped at €4,000 for the most modest incomes and dropped to €2,000 for high incomes.

European bonus of €1,000

Since October 1, 2025, an additional €1,000 grant is added for vehicles whose manufacturing site and battery production site are located within the European Economic Area. This bonus, established by the decree of September 8, 2025, brings the maximum aid amount to €5,200 for modest households and €4,100 for others. The specific list of models eligible for this European bonus is updated monthly on ADEME's website.

How does the energy saving certificate system actually work?

The CEE mechanism explained

The CEE scheme, created in 2006, requires energy suppliers (electricity, gas, heating oil, fuels) to finance energy saving actions under penalty of financial sanctions. Each supplier, called an "obligee", must achieve a savings target calculated in proportion to its energy sales.

The actors and grant payment

Under the "Boost for electric private vehicles" program, energy suppliers who are signatories to the official commitment charter directly pay the grant to partner dealers. The amount is then immediately deducted from the purchase price or first lease payment. Main signatories include EDF, Engie, TotalÉnergies, CertiNergy (partner of the Renault group), and many other energy companies. Each car manufacturer has established a partnership with one or more to offer immediate deductions to customers.

The specific conditions to obtain this financial aid

Vehicle technical criteria

Eligibility for the CEE grant requires meeting several strict criteria detailed on Service-Public.fr. The vehicle must belong to category M1 (passenger car), use electricity as the exclusive energy source, and be new (first registration). The purchase price must not exceed €47,000 including VAT, possibly including the battery rental cost. The curb weight must remain below 2,400 kg, thereby excluding large electric SUVs.

The minimum environmental score

The environmental score is an essential condition. Set at a minimum of 60 points by the decree of July 16, 2025, this score assesses the vehicle's environmental impact from its manufacture to its use. ADEME regularly publishes and updates the list of models achieving this score. Main eligible models include Renault Mégane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech, Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, Citroën ë-C3, or Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4.

Temporal and administrative conditions

To benefit from the grant, the operation must be initiated before January 1, 2026 (quote signature, order or lease contract) and completed before June 30, 2026 (invoice or delivery date). In case of leasing, the minimum contract duration is set at 24 months, excluding tacit renewal. The beneficiary must be an adult natural person with proof of domicile in France. Simplified procedures to obtain your grant

What documents are needed

The procedure for obtaining the CEE grant has been considerably simplified compared to the former ecological bonus. The dealer, already a partner of a signatory energy supplier, handles the entire administrative file. At the time of purchase, you simply need to provide your latest tax notice to justify your RFR, an identity document, and proof of address.

A grant to challenge

To improve the amount obtained, it is possible to compare offers between different dealers and brands. Some energy suppliers sometimes offer additional bonuses beyond the minimum regulatory amounts. The necessary documents systematically include the registration certificate (vehicle registration card) of the new vehicle, the detailed invoice mentioning the CEE deduction, and the sworn statement provided by the dealer. Once your electric car is acquired, you can charge your electric car at one of our Electra charging stations.

Social leasing: the solution to drive electric from €95 monthly

Access conditions for social leasing

Social leasing, relaunched on September 30, 2025 after a successful first experiment, allows the most modest households to rent an electric car for monthly payments between €95 and €150. Reserved for households whose RFR per share does not exceed €16,300 (corresponding to the first five deciles), this scheme offers exceptional conditions on 50,000 vehicles.

Amounts and available models

Social leasing aid amounts reach up to €7,000 for the most modest households, making it possible to obtain a Citroën ë-C3 at €95 per month, a Renault 5 E-Tech at €139 monthly, or a Peugeot e-208 at €135. The minimum contract duration is set at 36 months, with a limit of 12,000 km annually. As of November 15, 2025, 41,500 vehicles have already been leased under this scheme, testifying to the considerable success of the program.

Eligibility for social leasing requires proof of domicile and professional activity in France, with a home-work commute exceeding 15 km or more than 8,000 km traveled annually for professional reasons. Young people in apprenticeship or work-study programs can also benefit under certain conditions. Applications are made directly with participating dealers, upon presentation of proof of income and professional situation.

Additional aids to optimize your budget

Charging station tax credit

Beyond the CEE grant, several schemes further reduce the cost of acquiring an electric car. The tax credit for installing a home charging station offers €500 in tax reduction, corresponding to 75% of expenses incurred. This aid, extended until December 31, 2025, could disappear in 2026 according to ongoing budget discussions, reminds the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

Regional and local aids

Local authorities also offer substantial aid. The Greater Paris Metropolis allocates up to €6,000 to residents of its 131 communes via the "Clean Rolling Metropolis" scheme. The Occitanie region provides an additional €2,000 to modest households. Other regions like Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes or Hauts-de-France maintain similar programs, cumulative with the national grant.

Microcredit and business advantages

The clean vehicle microcredit, guaranteed at 50% by the State, allows borrowing up to €8,000 over a maximum of 7 years to finance the purchase of an electric car. Intended for people excluded from conventional bank credit, this scheme displays capped interest rates and monthly payments adapted to modest incomes. Applications are made through authorized associations like Restos du Cœur or Secours Catholique.

Companies benefit from specific tax advantages: total exemption from company vehicle tax (TVS), exceptional depreciation up to €30,000, partial VAT recovery on charging electricity. These schemes, maintained for 2025, make electric particularly attractive for professional fleets despite the end of the business ecological bonus.

What probable changes for 2026?

Tightening of environmental criteria

The future of the CEE scheme for 2026 remains uncertain, largely depending on the sixth period of energy saving certificates that will begin on January 1. The Ministry of Ecological Transition is considering tightening the environmental score, potentially raised to 65 or 70 points, excluding more imported models. New criteria could be added: battery recyclability rate, proportion of recycled materials, traceability of mineral extraction.

New social criteria

Grant amounts could be adjusted based on new social criteria. A bonus for residents of rural areas or low-emission zones (ZFE) is under study. Household composition (large families, disabled persons) could also influence the amount granted. These changes aim to better target priority groups while maintaining the scheme's attractiveness.

Extension of social leasing

Social leasing should be made permanent with a goal of 100,000 vehicles per year. Access conditions could be relaxed, with an increase in the income ceiling and an extension to recent used vehicles. This change would reach a wider population while developing the still embryonic electric used car market.

The integration of the fast charging station network into the allocation criteria constitutes a line of thought. Purchasers committing to primarily use charging networks powered by renewable energy could benefit from bonuses. This measure would encourage the development of environmentally virtuous charging infrastructure.
