You pull up to a station, you plug in... and then the question hits: how do you pay? App, bank card, badge, automatic vehicle recognition, the options have multiplied. The catch is that they don't all cost the same. For the same electrons, at the same station, the gap can reach several euros on a single charge. Here is how each option works, what it really costs, and which one is right for you.

At the fuel pump, everyone goes through the till. With electric charging, several routes lead to the same result. The common thread: in every case, the station has to know who you are before the current flows. That identification is what determines who gets billed, and at what price.

One thing stands out: paying by bank card directly at the station means the highest price, whereas the app gives access to the network's lowest price. On a medium-sized charge, the gap can reach several euros. For the same electricity, at the same station.

The app: the entry-level price

Why it is the cheapest option

The app is not a marketing gimmick, it is the channel that unlocks the lowest price grid. At Electra, the app opens the network's lowest price, with a rate that varies by country, time and how busy the station is. Without it, anonymous payment is always more expensive.

The reason is simple: with the app, the station knows who you are. It applies your subscription, retrieves your history, bills automatically. Without it, it is an anonymous payment, with the bank fees and uncertainty that entails. A bit like paying for a hotel night at the front desk with no reservation: it works, but it is never the best price.

What the app brings beyond price

The rate is shown before the session and stays locked until the end. You see available bays in real time, you book ahead, you get a notification when it is done, and your invoices are all in one place. For regular use, it is the difference between enduring charging and controlling it.

Autocharge: plug in and you have paid

The principle

It is the simplest gesture there is: you plug in, that is all. The station recognizes your car, charging starts, and payment is triggered when you put the connector back. No phone to pull out in the rain, no badge to dig out of your bag. It is even simpler than filling up with fuel, since there is no till. The feature is free and available to everyone.

How to activate it

Three steps, once and for all. Turn on Autocharge in the app by entering your vehicle's model and version, then choose the payment method to link. Start a first charge from the app: that is what syncs the car with your account. After that, you forget about it: just plug in.

Two limits to know

Autocharge relies on an identifier that the car sends to the station, the VID. It must be fixed and unique, a bit like a number plate. The problem is that some manufacturers assign a new one for each session: the station then cannot recognize the car from one time to the next. This setting is entirely out of our hands. Good news: by adding your vehicle in the app, you see straight away whether it is eligible.

Second limit: Autocharge only works on CCS connectors, the standard for fast DC charging. On an AC socket, you will need to go through the app or a badge.

The charging card: for driving everywhere

One card, every network

You may know this classic: the glovebox overflowing with badges, one per network, and never the right one at the right moment. The Electra charging card is an RFID card that you tap at any charge point in Europe, all operators combined, over 800,000 charge points. One card, one invoice, centralized in the app.

What price on other networks?

This is the point to understand. At Electra stations, the card applies the Electra rate and your subscription discount, since it is linked to your account. On other networks, the price is set by the charge point operator: the Electra+ discount does not apply there.

One exception deserves attention: the Electra+ Smart subscription gives access to a fixed preferential rate of €0.49/kWh on ChargeLeague networks: Atlante, Fastned and IONITY. On major routes, where these three operators are heavily present, the saving becomes significant.

The bank card: the backup

Simple, but the most expensive

The contactless bank card has one undeniable merit: it asks for nothing. No account, no app, no badge. It is the solution for the passing driver, the rental car, or the day your phone dies at the worst possible moment.

Its downside is just as clear: it is the highest price on the Electra network, with no way to apply a subscription. On a single charge a year, it makes no difference. For regular use, the gap becomes a real budget item.

What happens on your account

You may already have seen an unexpected line on your account after a charge, and jumped. No need to panic: when you plug in, a bank hold is placed to guarantee payment. It is not a debit but a pre-authorization, whose provisional amount often exceeds the real cost. It is adjusted as soon as charging ends. Depending on your bank, the provisional line may linger a few days before disappearing. With the app, everything is transparent: the final invoice arrives directly in your history.

The case of third-party badges

You can also use another operator's badge at an Electra station, this is called roaming. Be careful though: it is then your operator's price grid that applies, not Electra's. And overstay fees follow different rules depending on the operator. Check their price grid before plugging in.

Which method to choose for your needs

You mostly charge at home

Your public charges are occasional, a few times a year on the motorway. The app is enough, no subscription. Turn on Autocharge if your vehicle is compatible: it is free and saves you pulling out your phone at every stop.

You charge regularly in public

This is the profile where a subscription changes everything. Electra+ Essential at €1.99/month saves €0.10/kWh, paying for itself from 20 kWh charged in the month. Smart at €4.99/month saves €0.20/kWh: worth it from 25 kWh, often from the very first session. You drive all over Europe

The rules change: centralized billing, negotiated pricing, tracking by vehicle and by employee. Frequently asked questions about paying for charging

"Do I have to install an app?"

No, the contactless bank card works at our stations with no account at all. But it is the highest price, versus the lowest price via the app. It is up to you to decide what those few minutes of setup are worth.

"Can the price change while I am charging?"

No, never. The rate is shown before you start and locked for the whole session, even if the station fills up in the meantime. What you see when you plug in is what you will pay.

"Is Autocharge paid?"

No, it is free and open to everyone. You simply need a vehicle with a fixed VID identifier and a CCS connector. The app tells you if your model is compatible as soon as you add it.

"Why is my car not compatible?"

Because its manufacturer assigns it a different identifier for each session, instead of a fixed one. The station therefore cannot recognize it from one time to the next. It is a manufacturer's choice, over which we have no control.

"Is the card only for subscribers?"

No. It is free for Electra+ Essential and Smart subscribers, and costs €4.99 as a one-off payment for everyone else, with no subscription. Ordering is done from the app, delivery within 3 to 8 days.

"Does my discount work everywhere?"

At Electra stations, yes, including with the charging card. Elsewhere, it is the operator's price that applies. One major exception: with the Smart subscription, you charge at €0.49/kWh on ChargeLeague networks: Atlante, Fastned and IONITY.
